OKR software that keeps what your company learns

nex-okl is OKR software that goes one step further: it keeps the objective, then adds what you believed before the work started and what you learnt once it was done. Goals, lessons learnt and each person's growth plan sit on the same records as the projects, hours and people behind them.

In early access nex-okl is open to early-access customers now, and they are shaping what comes next.

What OKR software misses, and what nex-okl adds

OKRs, objectives and key results, answer one question well: are we on track? That is useful, and nex-okl keeps it. But an OKR has no place for what you found out on the way. The reason a goal was missed goes into a slide read once, and a year later another team learns the same expensive lesson.

nex-okl is built on the OKL framework: Objective, Knowledge, Learning. It keeps the objective and adds the two parts goal-setting leaves out.

  • Objective. What we are trying to do: a goal, with an owner and a date.
  • Knowledge. What we believe at this point, written down and dated: how long it will take, what it will cost, what could go wrong. It is never edited afterwards.
  • Learning. The difference between what we believed and what happened, why, and what that now lets us find out next, with the evidence attached.

The longer story is in Your Company Keeps Learning the Same Lesson.

Knowledge management that survives the org chart

Most companies do not have a knowledge problem; they have a keeping problem. The learning lives in one head and leaves when that person moves on. In nex-okl a lesson learnt belongs to the company.

Learnings climb

A learning starts with the individual who found it and is promoted to the team, the manager's level, then leadership. At each step it is checked again, and it climbs only when the evidence holds.

And corrections travel down

When leadership learns that a belief was wrong, everything below that depended on it is marked as needing another look.

Honest estimates

Because the guess is dated and cannot be quietly corrected, people guess to be right, not to please, and the gap between guess and actual shrinks. We call the result the Compound Learning Effect: each lesson builds on the last instead of resetting every quarter.

Objectives tied to the work, not to a slide

Because nex-okl sits on the same records as everything else, an objective is not a line in a separate goals tool. Every task in nex-orbit is tied to a goal, with hours recorded in nex-track. When a piece of work is done, what was learnt is kept in nex-okl, so the next team starts from it.

The quarterly review becomes about which beliefs turned out to be wrong.

An employee development plan built from real work

An appraisal in nex-hrm looks back. nex-okl also looks forward. Over a year, its record of each person's objectives, estimates and learnings shows how they work and are improving, and Nexcubator uses it to suggest a development plan.

Areas to improve

Specific patterns with evidence, not ratings: "estimates on fixed-price jobs ran over by 15 per cent on four of the last five".

Skills development against the job profile

Each role has a job profile in nex-org listing the skills it needs. Nexcubator compares it with the work the person has done and names the gaps, with the company's learnings on each and colleagues who have done that work before.

Career path and growth path

The roles a person could move into next come from your own structure in nex-org, with the skills each asks for that their work already shows. The growth path turns that into concrete steps, such as leading a project or owning an estimate from quote to invoice. Each step becomes an objective in nex-okl, so the next appraisal can see how it went.

Private to the employee first

OKL learnings are about the work, so they are open at team level. The AI assistant that helps an individual improve is separate, private to that person, and switched on only if they choose.

Growth suggestions belong to the employee first: they see them privately, change them, and decide what to share. The person and their manager agree the plan. Nothing the assistant learns privately about a person is used in a decision about them, and that is a rule in the software, not a line in a policy.

OKR software compared with a standalone OKR tool

nex-okl measures progress and keeps what you learnt.

OKR software FAQs

What is nex-okl?

nex-okl is the objectives, knowledge and learning app in Nexcubator. It keeps each objective with an owner and a date, the dated estimate made before the work started, and the learning once it was done. It also turns each person's record of work into a private growth plan: areas to improve, skills to develop and a path forward.

Is nex-okl OKR software?

It covers what OKR software does, setting objectives and seeing whether they are on track, and adds what OKRs leave out: what you believed before the work and what you learnt after. Think of it as the evolution of OKR for a company that intends to keep what it learns.

Who is it for?

It is for CEOs, COOs and heads of operations and HR who want goals, knowledge management and employee development on the same records as the work. It suits organisations that repeat similar work, have learnt the same expensive lesson more than once, and want new hires to inherit what the company knows.

How is it different from a standalone OKR tool?

A standalone OKR tool keeps goals apart from the work, so progress is reported by hand. In Nexcubator every task in nex-orbit is tied to a goal, hours come from nex-track, and appraisals in nex-hrm read the same objectives, with nothing exported or synced.

Can managers see an employee's growth suggestions?

Not unless the employee chooses to share them. Suggestions are private to the employee first; they change them and decide what to bring to their development conversation. The assistant that helps an individual is switched on only if they choose, and nothing it learns privately about a person is used in a decision about them.

Is nex-okl available now, and where is data hosted?

nex-okl is in early access and open to early-access customers now. Data is hosted in the EU by default, or in the region you prefer, and every change is recorded in one audit history. See keeping your information safe and pricing for the current picture.
